The gauge on the front should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold, rising a little as it heats. Losing a small amount over months is normal and you just top it up on the filling loop. Losing it every week or two means the water is going somewhere: a leak on the pipework or a radiator, a weeping pressure relief valve, or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Repeatedly topping up a system that keeps dropping introduces fresh oxygenated water every time, which is what turns a small leak into a sludged system.

Months between top-ups is normal. Weeks means something is wrong. Days means find it now. The rate is the single most useful thing you can tell an engineer on the phone, so make a note of the date each time you top up.
